Concept
TRIX smooths the close with an exponential moving average three times, then draws by what percent that line rose (or fell) since the previous candle. Smoothing three times filters out almost all the ripples, so the line moves slowly and smoothly.
Above 0, the smooth average is rising; below 0, it is falling. The signal line (trixSignal) is TRIX averaged once more, and a cross between the two is commonly read as a sign of a change in direction.

80 candles with the TRIX line, its signal line and volume. While the price falls for a long time, TRIX sinks deep below the zero line. After the price forms a base, at candle 60 (↑ marker) TRIX crosses above the signal line from below, then rises slowly and climbs above the zero line. Keyboard: ←/→ to move, +/− to zoom, 0 to see the whole chart.
Because the line is very smooth, the cross comes several candles after the bottom. In exchange, there are fewer crosses caused by ripples. This scene is one where the price rose after the cross, and a cross does not always lead to a rise. Drag the chart sideways with a finger or the mouse to move it, and pinch with two fingers to zoom in. With a keyboard, click the chart, then use ←/→ to move and +/− to zoom.
How it is calculated
Find the 15-candle exponential moving average of the close, then a 15-candle exponential moving average of that result, and then once more (an average stacked three times).
TRIX = (the triple average − its value on the previous candle) ÷ its value on the previous candle × 100. It is a one-candle rate of change (%), so the values are very small.
Signal line = the 9-candle exponential moving average of TRIX. The 9 candles are fixed in this game.

Trading ideas
Signal-line cross: a common use is to buy when TRIX crosses above the signal line and sell when it crosses below. A cross upward below the zero line is read as a signal near a bottom. The chart on this page shows that scene.
Crossing zero: for a slower but firmer signal, watch TRIX climbing above the zero line. It means the smooth average itself has started to rise.
Common traps
- Being smooth makes it late. Short, fast moves are over before TRIX reacts.
- In long sideways stretches, TRIX and its signal line stick close to the zero line and keep making small crosses.
- None of these are sure signals. Read them together with the trend and volume.
In the game
- “TRIX” is a “Advanced” weapon and uses 1 of the “Sub-charts” panels (limit 2). Volume in the starting setup already uses 1, so adding it brings it to 2 (0 left).
- The panel shows two lines, TRIX (trix) and its signal line (trixSignal); the zero line is drawn as a dotted line only when the panel has values below 0.
